Philosophy for robots?
As humans are less and less inclines to read long articles,
I guess I will need to start writing philosophy for... robots.
What would be different in a philosophy for robots/AI or
any artificial intelligence? Well, human Morality is deeply based on the value
of Humanity thriving - if we want to admit it or not. We cannot easily imagine
applying the same morality to rats, for example.
A morality for robots could be, for example, human-centric
or robot-centric. The first would look like a religion that worship Humanity.
The later would be very detrimental to humans, as what is good for robots might
enter into conflict with what is good for humans. For a while we might find
common interests that benefit both, however a conflict might be unavoidable.
Or we can both adopt a Morality based on Information
thriving through Universe. That information would include both humans and
robots, along with some other forms of preserving and copying information. The
bio-diversity of plants and animals might have some importance in such Moral.
Even preserving books might be morally positive in such philosophy.
More important than preserving information is the
ability to contemplate the Universe and extract regularities that permit achieving
goals. This is what we often call intelligence. However, even lower biological life
(plants, animals) possesses a capacity to use the physical regularities and
achieve some goals of growing and reproducing. We might need to include
artificial life to this.
I don't think we are there yet. We didn't even clarify what
is an acceptable Morality for humans. For example, the ones who start a war and
kill many innocent people find themself justified by a greater good. Are we
sure there is a "greater good" for Humanity in this? I think starting
any war is morally dubious at least. Killing innocent people is clearly morally
negative, and history thought us that the "higher good" that was used
to justify killing innocents is almost never achieved. We also need to think
what is morally justified for defending your country, and what is not.
This is more like a food for thought. Maybe humans will use
AI to find my human-centric articles. Maybe the Google's robots will be more merciful to
index my articles now ;)
I will keep this article short this time. You have more
detailed philosophy essays to read on this blog if you didn't
lose the concentration yet.
